Creating a printer device that uses Internet Print Protocol (IPP) should work.

It's simular to use an PL or SNMP driver, but IPP only requires a print server that supports it, whereas
SNMP and PJL drivers have to be supported by both the print server and the printer...

Thanks for the specific link. I didn't want to over-qualify my answer, since I wasn't familiar with the other options. I removed the word "requires" from my sentence, but the implication was left in my answer.
