Could you store the ftp script and put your own variable in it? You could then read the script in, replace the homemade variables as necessary, then execute the script?
For example, you could place @VAR1 into the script as a variable placeholder, then later replace that value:
Read the script in line by line from a file.
For each line:
statement = %scanrpl( '@VAR1': %trim( newValue ): statement ); // FYI: 7.1 bif
