make sure on the printer itself, if there is a timeout value, it is almost always too low (i usually set it at or close to the max value allowed) but this is often the reason for writers ending on longer reports

Subject: Writer job ends abnormally

Not sure if this is *the* message. The message I originally see is not in the writer's job log or on QHST. But, a message, maybe CPD338D, is presented for a writer. Options available are (C R). I respond R. Writer ends abnormally. Restart writer, and printing works just fine.

Questions (maybe naive):

1) Why does the writer end when I respond with an R?
2) Message text for the message is "An error occurred while receiving data". Could this imply an issue with the network card in the printer? Or, is there some other explanation?

This was brought to my attention on two printers. I told the person who reported it, the writers would end, and they did. Is this what is supposed to happen?

On v5r4. SA does not believe in applying CUMes, so this issue, if it is a real issue, might have been fixed years ago. If there is a PTF that addresses this, it is remotely possible that it might get applied, but only if a case can be made (groan). I seriously wonder how this sa handles mundane things like car maintenance - wait until disaster and blame automaker?????
