I have a new 520 box, using DHCP via HMC. If I plug in cat5 cable fromHMC1

What's your question?
You have a HMC - two interfaces. One is connected to your general
management LAN, where it most likely configured to have a static IP
address. This is known as the "Public" IP address in HMC terms. The
other one is a DHCP interface, which is the private management LAN for
your IBM i and the HMC interfaces of your systems. This is usually a
totally seperate VLAN, with no connections to any other VLANs (no
router present).
If you have connected it like that, then yes, the HMC1 interface of a
new machine will configure itself using DHCP using the information
provided by the HMC DHCP server.
