I guess it would depend upon the definition of "a bear", but I know on my V5R2 system, it's still a consideration. You could even test your system easily.

Copy the CMF file from production to test with all of test's logicals in place and watch it slow to a crawl after a 100,000 records or so. ECL, same thing. Those two files I always remove the LFM's before copying.
