OK It works like this. Essentially you can fill those slots with whatever number of 3001 and 3002 (and 3004 IIRC) DIMMs until you get to 1GB total. This would be the most velocity and memory the thing can handle. You CAN go right on past 1GB all the way to 2GB (at least) however once you pass 1GB you get an A900 1760 on the front panel (with the yellow light) which indicates you must run Reclaim Main Storage. Problem is that the only way to run that is via an IPL (it's automatic). However the real problem is that your clock speed is cut in half as a penalty for blowing past the IBM storage limit on the machine.(It's actually a hardware limitation that results in the clock speed reduction) As a result you have lots of memory but little forward velocity.

So crank it up to 1GB and let 'er rip.
