David, I think you might be making it too difficult. I think you should be able to do something like this:

Update MyRefTable r
Set oldclient = (Select t.newclient from MyTable1 t where r.oldclient=t.oldclient)
Where exists (Select t.newclient from MyTable1 t where r.oldclient=t.oldclient)
