The downside of using a trigger-mediator is that it adds overhead. Not an issue if you're just doing a security check, but if you're propagating data, or interpretively executing a script, then you need to save the overhead wherever and whenever you can.

It all depends on what you're doing with the trigger program, and how much extra overhead it can tolerate without annoying the user.

In the scripting example, the scripts themselves can be easily changed, giving the same effect as a mediator.
