James didn't say whether he had looked at IBM's KB articles on ASCII printers, to see what kind of connections are possible. The link is

http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=nas1023b5ee0895389a7862569c10078d695

and says that it only works with LPR connections - here is a quote -

"If LPR is set to Y , then the printer model should work with a Remote Output Queue or a *LAN 3812 device description that uses the TSPLPRD utility, both of which communicate with the printer and print server using the TCP/IP Line Printer Requester (LPR) protocol."

The N4000E is not mentioned there.

Have you tried LPR/LPD using a remote outq and 'RAW'.

Hi everyone,

I've been trying to create a print device for a Lexmark 2400 series
printer that is connected using a Lexmark N4000e Fast Ethernet, 10/100Ba
printer server. This is one of those devices that connects to the LAN and
to the printer via USB. We've used the printer itself without problems
when directly connected to a 5250 console via twinax, but when we move it
to use the print server device we can't get more that a few lines of
garbled text to print.

We have created a new print device for it that is *LAN attached, uses port
9100, and *HPPJLDRV. We've tried several other settings, all to no avail.
Does anyone have any experience with this particular print server or can
anyone give us some ideas as to what we might need to change to make it
work?

if you want to understand why that is, there are many good books on
the design of operating systems. please pass them along to redmond
when you're done reading them :)
