The Euro has nothing to do with the many permutations of the same 189 glyphs that have been around since probably before the 5250 data stream was first developed.

And knowing if a database accurately compares "its representation of that character to whatever representation you were asking the database to evaluate" doesn't require multiple permutations; it merely requires that both sides of the conversation be on the same permutation. Which would be much simpler if, for any given collection of characters, there were only one valid permutation.
