Solved.

If you prompt the CVTIFS command, hit F9 to see all parms, and page down a
few times, tou'll see this parm:

Convert *DDIR objects . . . . . CVTDDIR *NO

Change to *YES and you're good to go. Note that field IFOTYP will be *DSTMF
instead of *STMF.

I just didn't RTFM far enough.
