Idiots will mange to accomplish damage with almost any technology. If your night operator had bothered to read the help text for STG(*FREE) he/she/it would have known how it worked. What part of "data portion ... is freed" is unclear?
At least the restore to recover the objects saved with STG(*FEE) would have been less painful than if the object headers had also been deleted.
The value of STG(*FREE) is in building a hierarchical storage solution. For example, frequently accessed objects in main storage (via SETOBJACC), often used objects on DASD as usual, infrequently used objects stored off-line but accessible via the Storage Extension Exit Point (i.e., automatically restored when a request to access is received).
