In reading these instructions I need to ask how one is able to enter
line commands on a HMC v7r4.0?

Thanks,
Rogers

Subject: HMC updates (doing it remotely) via putty.

I have a remote HMC at another location. Has anyone ever attempted
upgrading from V6.1.3 to V7.3.4 via putty and using these instructions??
I can ping ftp.software.ibm.com with no problems from the remote HMC.

*Updating with additional V6R1.3 Corrective Service Patches

*The patch updates will be much quicker than the update to V6R1.3, some
30 seconds or less, if you look away, the reboot might have already
started.

updhmc -t s -h ftp.software.ibm.com -u anonymous -p ftp / -f
/software/server/hmc/fixes/MH01082.zip -r

updhmc -t s -h ftp.software.ibm.com -u anonymous -p ftp / -f
/software/server/hmc/fixes/MH01110.zip -r

updhmc -t s -h ftp.software.ibm.com -u anonymous -p ftp / -f
/software/server/hmc/fixes/MH01128.zip -r

updhmc -t s -h ftp.software.ibm.com -u anonymous -p ftp / -f
/software/server/hmc/fixes/MH01127.zip -r

Once your last reboot is complete, verify the installation by running
following command.

lshmc -V

You should see following output

"version= Version: 6
Release: 1.3
HMC Build level 20080112.1
MH01082: New DST updates and Code Update fix for E302F842, B1818A0D,
B1818A0E failures (01-12-2008)
MH01110: Security fixes for HMC V6R1.3 (05-22-2008)
MH01128: Disable HTTP trace
MH01127: Enable Upgrading to V7R3.4.0 (08-18-2008)
","base_version=VV6R1.2
"

If there is any firmware maintenance you need to perform on your Power 5
servers prior to upgrading to V7 then you need to accomplish that first
before doing any further HMC upgrades. If you want to backup your HMC
while it is at V6R1.3 then now would also be a good time to perform such
a task.
*Upgrading to V7R3.4 from V6R1.3 Remotely

*With patch MH01127 applied to HMC V6R1.3 you are ready to upgrade to
V7R3.4. Before this patch, getting to later V7 levels was a two step
process which involved upgrading to V7R3.2 then upgrading to V7R3.4.
Following are the commands required to download then configure the HMC
to perform a remote upgrade using the network images. The instructions
for remote upgrade using network images can be found from the link
listed in related URLs section and there is additional information and
options you might wish to review prior to continuing. Following are the
command you could use to perform the upgrade to V7R3.4 remotely.

saveupgdata -r disk

getupgfiles -h ftp.software.ibm.com -u anonymous --passwd ftp / -d
/software/server/hmc/network/v7340

chhmc -c altdiskboot -s enable --mode upgrade

hmcshutdown -r -t now

Once the HMC reboots the installation should start and typically takes
about an hour. After the installation of V7R3.4 is completed you should
be able to remotely access the HMC again. You then will need to install
the latest required fixes, which as of June 2009 is Service Pack 2 and
MH01181. The following commands will download the packages from the IBM
website, install them, and reboot.

Installing 734 SP2 (three fixes then reboot)

updhmc -t s -h ftp.software.ibm.com -u anonymous -p ftp / -f
/software/server/hmc/updates/HMC_Update_V7R340_SP2_1.zip

updhmc -t s -h ftp.software.ibm.com -u anonymous -p ftp / -f
/software/server/hmc/updates/HMC_Update_V7R340_SP2_2.zip

updhmc -t s -h ftp.software.ibm.com -u anonymous -p ftp / -f
/software/server/hmc/updates/HMC_Update_V7R340_SP2_3.zip -r

Installing MH01181 (one fix file then reboot)

updhmc -t s -h ftp.software.ibm.com -u anonymous -p ftp / -f
/software/server/hmc/fixes/MH01181.zip -r

After the HMC is rebooted with the final required maintenance PTF then
you can verify that the install is complete by using the lshmc -V
command. The output should appear similar to the following.

"version= Version: 7
Release: 3.4.0
Service Pack: 2
HMC Build level 20090514.1
MH01181: Fix for HMC V7R3.4.0 Service Pack 2 (05-21-2009)
","base_version=V7R3.4.0 "

Congratulations! Now you are ready to manage your servers with the new
HMC
V7 console.
