You are correct, the SMTP server on the i doesn't provide for
authentication when forwarding mail. You've got a couple of choices:
1) Quit forwarding mail, have the SMTP server deliver the mail directly.
2) Buy a 3rd party SMTP server that will support authentication.

For option 2, Brad Stone offers an i based solution
