I created a remote 5250 session to my HMC directly, using the shared 5250 console on the HMC itself. You'll need to change one of the settings on the
HMC to allow remote connectivity, I can't remember where that's at, but Google is your friend and you'll find it like I did.

I connect to my HMC via remote desktop to my internal workstation using a Citrix gateway for security. I don't use my companies laptop except to
remote into my desktop and run everything from there. I have some things on my laptop, but I keep the big configurations on my workstation. Figured
that one out during my first IBM Disaster Recovery exercise in Boulder CO.

It's pretty simple, you just need to create a new 5250 console session and modify it in the following way; under Communication select Configure then
change the following attributes.
System name: "HMCNAME"
System name: "PROPERTIES button" > User ID: "Q#HMC" (exactly as it looks between the quotes)
Not secured "checked"
Port Number: "2300"

You're connecting to the HMC, not the iSeries machines. Once you connect to the HMC it'll request the language number, "21" for English. Then the
HMC userid you have on the HMC itself, "hscroot" or whatever your account is. Your iSeries machines will be listed 1-* depending on how many iSeries
you have connected to the HMC. Select the number corresponding to the machine you want, then the number for the LPAR you want using a SHARED console.
Make sure you use shared and you can disconnect and reconnect to your hearts content without interrupting anything at the console. Just close the
window and open a new one. I've ran through DST options using this method, so I know you're constantly connected to this session and I can watch the
server rolling through it's IPL stages without having to hang out in front of the HMC. You'll need to input your session key: and then you're
connected to the server as if you were in front of the HMC. Now please understand that if someone else is in front of the HMC and they're looking at
the console, they'll see you doing things on the console for that system, if they try to do anything you could be fighting each other for control of
the shared console.

Good luck,
