He's probably just looking for an example where you "think" the person is only running a simple SELECT statement but in reality it may be running other statements under the covers that actually update data. IOW writing your own exit point to try and strip this out may be a bit beyond some basic assumptions. And is subject to change upon new features in new releases.
For example, this 6.1 sql scenario:
CREATE TABLE ROB/neill(MYKEY int as identity, MYDATA CHAR ( 30), ts timestamp not null for each row on update as row change timestamp,
PRIMARY KEY (MYKEY))
