Bob,

I didn't give you an example of what may work for you, so let me offer one.

UPDATE LRACCTWF a SET a.number =
(SELECT max(b.number)
FROM LRICEXTWF b
WHERE DIGITS(a.lrpin) = substr(b.stude00001,1,5))
WHERE EXISTS
(SELECT 1
FROM LRICEXTWF b
WHERE DIGITS(a.lrpin) = substr(b.stude00001,1,5))

This will get you past the error you're getting, but I am not sure if that
is what you'll ultimately want as a solution.
The reason I say it may not be what you want is that MAX may not be picking
the 'correct' school number from LTICEXTWF.

So, you need to ask yourself, how can a single student have multiple school
numbers in the LRICEXTWF file?
You can see which students these are by doing something like this:

select substr(stude00001,1,5) as studentPIN, count(*)
from LRICEXTWF
group by substr(stude00001,1,5)
having count(*) > 1

If you can't enhance the join so it guarantees a one-to-one mapping, can you
delete some of these 'duplicate' values?

There may be other solutions, depending on which rows you need to pick from
the one-to-many subset.
