After Hurricane Rita, a few years ago, we had rolling power outages and no
generator. So, we pulled our rack-mounted 520 out and took it to our
warehouse about 20 miles away. Set it on a desk, hooked it into the network,
and voila, we're back in business. We kept it there for about 2 weeks, then
moved it back on a slow weekend after everything had stabilized.

As for any gotchas, I would just say make sure it's in a safe place where it
won't be tinkered with or damaged in any way.

As for home-brew alternatives, I've got one, but I'm almost afraid to tell
it. We moved office locations a year ago, and in setting up the new office
we discovered that our UPS balance was out of whack. A couple of our UPS's
had too much load to adequately handle a power outage. So, a solution was
devised where the 520 would be rack mounted in the HP3000 rack where there
is a decent sized UPS that was severely under-utilized. It's an interesting
looking rack with all the off-white bezels, then the black 520 stuck in the
middle, but it works nicely. The first time I had a CE come out, he just
shook his head.

Any non-rack or home-brew alternatives? We still have the carcass of the
sidecar we removed from our 510; any practical way to gut that and put
in rack rails? Are there any "gotchas" involved in just letting it sit
out naked and unmounted?
