a lot of facts in this NY Times article on how IBM keeps the
competition at bay in the mainframe space:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/23/technology/companies/23mainframe.html?_r=1&sq=ibm&st=cse&adxnnl=1&scp=2&adxnnlx=1237896185-EPeheD1D0zpmXLx19OSfRQ

"...So when an upstart, Platform Solutions in Sunnyvale, Calif.,
developed software that turned standard servers into systems that
mimicked I.B.M.’s expensive mainframes, Big Blue fought back. After
legal action failed to fend off the pipsqueak, I.B.M. resorted to a
bear hug: it bought Platform in July for $150 million. And then it
promptly terminated the innovative product. ..."

I sure hope IBM does not see its IBM i customers as locked in as those
on the mainframe. The article is more evidence to support the view
that IBM customers have to be ever vigilant because IBM works actively
to limit their upgrade and migration choices.
