Well "no joy" really helps me diagnose the problem.

You can use a DDM file transparently. The RPG compiler will fetch the real file description from the remote system via the DDM file.

According to everything I read, I should also be able to CPYF it onto
the box where my code lives, to take a look at it. When I do this, it
just sits there, keyboard locked, until I SysRq-2 it, at which point, if
I look at my local copy, I get (as Anne Robinson would say) nothing.

CPYF will copy the data from the remote system via a DDM file. When working correctly you will see a status message indicating the copy is occurring (as long as you haven't disabled status messages). It will even honour CRTFILE(*YES).

Any idea what I could be doing wrong?

Not from what you've described. You should receive communication exceptions if there is a problem connecting, authenticating, or accessing the data. A proper description of the observed behaviour, the DDM file definition, and information regarding any job log messages will go a long way.

Simon Coulter.
