The reasoning for the relatively high priority (for QSPL especially) goes
back to the printers in use when the system was implemented. In the late
80's we were still using a lot of impact printers, and it took a lot of
time for the printer to get back up to speed if it had to wait on data.
The time to stop and restart a print band or a print head could be a
second or more.

RE: IBM default job priority for writers

No one changed the defaults. The reason as I understand it for 15 is
the fact that you want to send the burst of data to the printers buffer
and you do not want you printers stopping and waiting for the computer.
The standard print spooler does not use a lot of CPU to print std SCS or
IPDS. However when you run HPT you can chew up lots of CPU.

Subject: IBM default job priority for writers

All,

Just curious what the IBM default job priority for writers are.

It appears the classes involved are:
qgpl/qspl
qgpl/qspl2
qgpl/qspl3
qgpl/qspl4

Our priorities for the above are 15,40,30,50 respectively. That seems a
little strange to me, particularly the 15. I'm wondering if at some
point somebody changed the defaults.
