Starting from scratch, I would agree. Working on legacy apps, though, multi-members might be a viable (better in some cases?) option.
For example, when I started here, we had a S/36 app that created workfiles based upon the workstation id. While a common technique on the 3/34/36 systems, I never liked it, but I inherited it here. I hated going through a long list of like named files. Instead, as time permitted I created multi-membered files where the member name was the WSID. It was a whole lot easier to do that and add an OVRDBF to the 36 procedure than it would have been to add a new field and modify the myriad programs that used it.
For new stuff, though, I follow Rob's principle. In fact, even changed the MAXMBRS default of CRTPF from *NoMax to 1 several releases back. Of course, all new tables are created using SQL's DDL.

Doug, you can use multi member files that were created with DDL. However,
- You have to do a CHGPF to alter it to allow multimembers.
- You lose all constraints, etc
- For the rest of eternity you have to either use ALIAS or OVRDBF
What is so darned good about multi members that can't be solved by simply
adding another column that is indicative of what you used the member name
for?

Ok,
Some are saying that you can use them with aliases, etc. and I assume
you
just said that won't work Jeff.....I'm confused.

Unless I say so.
