And sometimes unique constraints.
Also consider adding surrogate keys using identity column attributes. Makes
it easier for application developers to uniquely identify a row.
And look into check constraints to hardwire some business rules into the
database and avoid data integrity issues.

There's lots more to architecting a database of course, but those are some
highlights.

Subject: RE: DDL Files - Tables and keys

Always use a primary key...

SQL standards recommend it.

You can't use FK constraints without it...

You can't even use CPYF MBROPT(*UPDADD)....

Subject: DDL Files - Tables and keys

There is going to be a standards meeting tomorrow and I have been
writing
up some notes and suggestions for DDL files. Any additional Input from
the group would be appreciated.

One thing I was going to suggest was that tables should be created
without
any keys, unless there is a specific reason to use a PRIMARY key, which
I
believe is the only key you can add to a table....correct? We should
use
Indexes for keyed data and views for those files that we need specific
fields displayed or criteria applied.

Any other suggestions as it relates specific to Tables and keys?
