Is there a way to see if a field is null?

I am trying the following SQL script
UPDATE SRCMSTP B SET B.XTRAFLD07
= (SELECT A.EXPIREDATE
FROM AXSLIB/SRCEXPIRE A
WHERE A.XCATCD=B.LCATCD and A.EXPIREDATE <> ' ')
WHERE EXISTS
(SELECT * FROM AXSLIB/XPIRESRCE A
WHERE A.XCATCD=B.LCATCD and A.EXPIREDATE <> ' ')

but I get the response
Null values not allowed in column or variable XTRAFLD07.

Now, I have run a seperate SQL to blank the field XTRAFLD07 in ALL the
records, but I still get the same response
Anybody see whats wrong with my UPDATE?

Thanks in advance
