I'm going through a similar issue with inhouse databases designed by our
engineers. They designed the databases as they would be used in reports;
i.e. spreadsheet format with like columns going across. This limits
their functionality to the number of columns defined.

I want to redesign their database so that like data elements are stored
in their own table as rows. The issue/challenge is if they demand their
reporting queries remain the same, I must pivot the data in a view or
stored procedure. Even though the pivot (IMO) should be done by the
report, not the query.

Some of the data are like avg1, avg2, ... avg10; high1, ... high10.
These are columns in a table. As Chuck mentioned earlier, the challenge
is retrieving the data later so that the elements are "in order", avg1
before avg2 before avg10.
