That could be the reason. We were only looking at 2 LPARs on an 8xx
box.

Thanks,

Then your BPs took you for a ride! This has never been a requirement
and rarely even a suggestion because as you mention they are used
*RARELY if at all.

I have seen this a few other places as well and I think it is usually
simple ignorance. On pre-i machines LPAR 1 had to have a dedicated
Optical because it was in the CEC, then LPAR 2 needed one too because it
was the first one after the first one (that is it couldn't use the one
in the CEC so it needed it's own.) Once that pattern was set the third
LPAR seemed like it should have its own as well and so it goes. Note
that occasionally it was cheaper to simply put one into a 5074 or 5094
for example which caused it to be dedicated but not usually.

RE: LPAR Optical requirement

Interesting.

At my last job we had BPs configure an LPARed system for us and all
three insisted that it needed to have a dedicated optical drive for each
LPAR. Here, we already had an LPARed system when I started, and it has
an internal DVD-Rom and two stand-alones. Each dedicated to an LPAR and
I haven't touched any of them in nine months!
