Elvis,

Yes that worked, thanks. I'll have to try and remember that.

I actually just ended up using two statements when I couldn't get the original to work.

This worked also:

update csteqcp A
set cecsts = coalesce((Select 'A' from sysibm/sysdummy1
where exists(select * from csteqnp b
where a.locnbr = b.locnbr
and a.ctrnbr = b.ctrnbr
and a.cusnbr = b.cusnbr
and a.itmctg = b.itmctg)
),'I')

Just seems like the simple original syntax should have worked :)

Would this work (UNTESTED):

update csteqcp A
set cecsts = case
(select min(1)
from csteqnp B
where a.locnbr = b.locnbr and
a.ctrnbr = b.ctrnbr and
a.cusnbr = b.cusnbr and
a.itmctg = b.itmctg)
when 1 then 'A'
else 'I' end

Is the following not supported or am I doing it wrong?

update csteqcp A
set cecsts = case
when exists (select * from csteqnp B
where a.locnbr = b.locnbr
and a.ctrnbr = b.ctrnbr
and a.cusnbr = b.cusnbr
and a.itmctg = b.itmctg)
then 'A'
else 'I'
end
