Thanks Brigitta,
I used the Dense_Rank and it worked fine.
I have another question:
Given the SQL Statement:
Select Distinct Gl_Year,Gl_Period,
Dense_Rank() Over(Order by Gl_year,Gl_Period)
From Control_Xref
I get the following error:

Message ID . . . . . . : SQL0214

Message . . . . : ORDER BY expression is not valid.

Cause . . . . . : The expression in the ORDER BY clause in position 1 is not
valid for reason code 2.
1 - The SELECT statement contains a UNION, EXCEPT, or INTERSECT.
2 - DISTINCT is specified in the SELECT clause and the expression or
column cannot be matched exactly with an expression or column in the select
list.

The field names GL_Year and Gl_Period are in the Control_Xerf file.

Thanks,

Subject: AW: AW: Another SQL Question

Hi,

With Row_Number you won't get duplicates, i.e. each row gets ist own
counter.
With Dense_Rank you can have several first "places", several second "places"
etc.
As far as I have understood, he wanted to have the same number for all rows
with the same fiscal year, group and source code. That's why I used
Dense_Rank instead of Row_Number.
But there is an other OLAP ranking function, RANK().
Like DENSE_RANK duplicates are allowed, but if there are 2 first places, the
next counter will be 3.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen / Best regards

Hi,

If you are already on release V5R4, you may use the OLAP-Ranking
function DENSE_RANK.

Birgitta, what's the difference in layman's terms between ROW_NUMBER and
DENSE_RANK?
