Elvis, it seems odd that UNION would, by default (DISTINCT), weed out
duplicates. Is that the SQL standard? In this case, I don't think it
affects this query, as all records between the two tables are unique.

Yes, it's part of a SQL standard.

Yes, it will affect performance of this query as distinct processing will
still take place even though there are no duplicates between two tables.
DB2 engine can't know ahead of time there are no duplicates in the files.
Like I said, you want to specify UNION ALL instead.
