IIRC the 79% increase was attributed to sales of the Windows operating
system, the one without any real competition in the consumer market.
Try to walk into BestBuy for instance and get a PC system with an
operating system other than Windows. Microsoft also released the new
version of Windows which they charge handily for. The last time I
checked, the updates to i5/OS are free. Sure Microsoft's revenue is up,
but I hardly think you can equate that with a superior product. Just a
product that has a virtual monopoly on the consumer PC market. Not the
same thing.

For the record, I know Linux is gaining ground and the latest Mac OS
runs Windows programs. I think the consumer market is not as up on
these developments as followers of this list and therefore accept what
is sitting on the shelf at their local computer retailer of choice.
