IBM does not link directly to hardware in this platform... As I recall, W-code links to NMI (new MI) which virtualizes the machine interfaces. Only ILE compilers generate W-code. The OPM compilers generate OMI, which converts to NMI.

Oh yeah, Java bytecode can be converted to NMI...
