And all these years I thought QDFRTVFD was "Retrieve Device File Description"! I guess that was a poor assumption -- an inference, from knowing the DF means "Device File" in [almost?] every other program named with the QDF prefix.

A combination of the following appears to be what is available, there may be more, to extract many of the details [not any string constants] from a printer file:
DSPFD TYPE(*ATR)
DSPFD TYPE(*SPOOL)
DSPFD TYPE(*RCDFMT) or List Record Formats (QUSLRCD) API
DSPFFD or List Fields (QUSLFLD) API

Apparently there is a RPLPRTF TAA Tool; I did not search the web to verify that naming or any specifics.
