I think Charles's suggestion of linking the owner record to
the inventory status record missed the notion that the
timestamp ownership begins for an inventory item is in the
OWNER table. To make it work both I_CONTROL# and I_OWERID
would be used together to find the owner record.


But does it really, or more to the opint do you really need the timestamp in the owner record?

Seems to me the timestamp on the "purchase the car" transaction is a valid indication of the start of
the ownership period. In the same vein, "traded in car" would be an indication of the end of the
ownership period.

However, the example data is missing a "purchased the car" type transaction for Charlie.

See my last post to Joe, if you can't use the transaction itself to determine begin & end times for an
ownership period, then you'd be best served by having both in the owner record.

As far as changing the database, you might be surprised at what yuou can do without needing to
recompile existing RPG programs.
