Don't know if it qualifies as "simple" as I've not done it myself (even
though a coworker and his Dad here have both have) but direct reading of
Excel files is supported on the i5. Just have them transfer the file to a
shared drive in the IFS and go from there.

Failing that, you may want to save the file as delimited and process it
with IFS without the Java and Excel headaches. I found the CPYFRMIMPF to
be a pain. For example if the sender sticks in an item number that is
bigger than your file supports how do you handle it? Processing IFS files
directly with RPG gives you the granularity to handle these exceptions.

And CPYFRMIMPF got to be a real pain with V5R3 and above when IBM got
really picky with CCSID's and stuff. Be a real peach if you ran into this
problem after an upgrade eh?
