I think the question really needs to be:
How much information really needs to be brought on the screen for
them to perform their task? Limiting some of the fields such as social
security numbers or credit card numbers etc by showing only the first 5 or
6 characters might be a better approach.

I have one client who has a user setting that determines whether the user
sees actual SSN or a scrambled number used only for ID purposes.
