If you determine that it is a hard drive failure, then take
out the disk drives, _gently_ slam them down several times on
a padded hard surface like a desk protector on a desk (or
whack them with a rubber mallet), re-install and try rebooting again.

That's what has worked for me in the past. In fact, an IBM
maintenance engineer did it one time to get our 40S running again...
