RPG/DE? I found a manual for that at the bottom of a desk drawer one time....
It must have been hiding there for 20 years or so. <g>

If I remember right there was as System/32 that used a flavor of RPG
where the screen specs were in the same source as the code and I think
they were listed first. The A may have designated user Access.

I think the students were asking just for kicks, like me, as they
know/remember:

F=File
D=Data
C=Calc
O=Output
etc. etc.

and they wanted to know (thats a good point to me) why, same as they wanted
to know why the 10 char limitation on object names (which we knew)

Mark,
According to the DDS manual:

Form type for physical and logical files (position 6).

Type an A in this position to designate this as a DDS form. The form
type is optional and is for documentation purposes only.

David may shoot me since this is kinda not on topic, but a

student in

one
of
my wifes classes asked why for files (PF/LF/DSPF/PRTF) the

"A' was used in

column 6?

Told them neither of us knew (never thought about it) but I'd find
out.......
