One of the recent announcements that hasn't attracted as much attention
here
as I expected is the MySQL announcement.
At COMMON Jim Herring spelled out that since they will be using the DB2
engine as the storage mechanism for MySQL, that it will be possible to
retrieve MySQL data via DB2 and vice-versa. It should also mean that we
can
access such data via our RPG/COBOL programs and _that_ to me is an
exciting
possibility.
I know a number of customers considering PHP as a vehicle for implementing
Help Desk, CRM, etc. without the cost of the commercial packages. However
-
they know they will need to integrate to existing systems and produce
reports, and ... They could of course do it all through PHP but if they
have
existing RPG skills it is much more attractive to use those.
Anyone else think this is interesting?
