Thanks to all who reponded so quickly. If I'd thought this through, I would
have found it, but it is just so much easier to ask a friend. Your help much
appreciated and saved me several minutes of angst.

The key is to try that _first_. Immediately after authenticating to
FTP, switch to name format 1. Don't do any other command like BIN or
PWD or anything until you've switched. I've had 100% success that way,
and unexplainable failures if I don't follow this rule.

Of course, I would be amiss if I didn't mention the open source FTPAPI
which makes scripting FTP transfers much easier. See the FAQ.
