Actually, I googled "boot from usb" and found a bunch of stuff, the most interesting that HP has a couple of utilities that work with non-HP USB drives to make them bootable:

HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool Version 2.0.6

When I have some time I want to set one up to boot some version of Linux.
