Don't know about the screen scraping.  What about a trigger on the file? 
No vendor modification needed.  Of course, if they assume any write error 
to the file is because the key already exists, then you're going to have 
issues.  Probably better to just have the trigger send the test message. 
Most vendor packages probably can't handle a trigger error.
