There are and have been before issues with blowing up the link loader if you do too many PTFs all at once. When that happens you need to slip the LIC which while not a huge deal isn't for the faint of heart and for that among other reasons is to be avoided. While there is logic in doing the group PTFs first since on average they will have more recent PTFs than the CUMe the instructions are best when followed!

On the old release.
APY all PTFs Perm. Extend Licensed Internal Code Space (IPL)
Set up the upgrade (IPL to start)
Load the CUME (IPL)
Load the remaining groups (IPL)
Yer on the new release.

So A minimum of four IPLs are required to get from the old release to the new one Compared to WinDOHs this is still a bargain!

All,

Normally, when installing cume and group PTFs, I install the group PTFs
first followed by the cume PTFs.

However, the v5r4 upgrade instructions seem to be pretty clear to
install the cume PTFs prior to installing group PTFs.

My question is, do you need to do the automatic IPL for the cume PTFs to
be applied (and wait for INZSYS to complete) before installing the group
PTFs?

I don't remember how I did the v5r3 upgrade <grin>
