The technical term for dropping the drive is "gravity reset". :)

Another, probably safer, option is to use a rubber mallet and whack the
side (NOT the top or bottom) of the drive.  Whack gently; harder if
necessary.

The third, definitely safe, method is to hold the drive in your hard and
whirl your arm in a 360.  The idea being the centripetal force may
loosen the stiction.

Personally, I prefer the mallet.
