Personally, I'd expect the API to crash if called with too many parameters.
And simply checking for the specific error message that it ONLY raises if it's the V5R3 version and isn't fed enough parameters (and isn't raised at all in previous versions), and calling it again with the extra parameters if the condition is raised, seems to work as well out in the field as it does in theory.
Oh, and I never once said that there are V2R3 customers beating a path to our doorstep. In fact, we haven't seen any new or updating CISC customers in quite a while. But I have little doubt that we've still got plenty in the V4R2-V4R5 range, and maybe even a few in the V3R7-V4R1 range.
