V5R3 SMTP problem

I have a customer that just converted to 5.3.  As a result, none of the
email functionality that we have added to their software are working.  All
the interfaces are done with SNDDST.

I can telnet to the mail router on port 25 and send a test email just fine.

I can telnet to port 25 of the local AS400 and send and email message that
obviously gets routed to the mail router just fine.

But sending a *LMSG with the SNDDST command does not work.  The customer
moved from one AS400 as part of the upgrade, but swears that everything is
exactly the same, the OS being the only change.

Anyone have any ideas?
