According to TV news, the only communications working in the first few days was satelite phones, which rescue workers like Red Cross have, but not local police, medical, fire etc. while emergency generators ran out of fuel pretty fast. The military has their communications, and presumably FEMA, and their priority is to get everyone out of the area, then cope with the dead, and infrastructure repair. The Army Corps of Engineers estimates it will take 1-3 months to "de-water" the Big Uneasy.

According to TV news, the immediate region is pretty much kaput when it comes to phones, e-mail, etc. and all the people there are being evacuated helter skelter across the nation. before the storm hit, the city was told to evacuate, so all the people with autos and $ for gas, drove out, which was about 80% of the 1/2 million people in New Orleans, and comparable numbers from other communities, leaving the people who relied on public transportation.

The 80% that got out before the storm hit, presumably at some point will be reconnecting to their e-mail, except if their ISP was in the Gulf of Mexico, they can't connect there. However, depending on support for their cell phones, they may be able to go back on the air, after they get out of the devastated area. They might not have phone #s of business associates, if they were expecting to return to home and work after the storm passed, and not took much stuff with them when they drove out of town.

There are the standard rescue resources being used for the mass of the population such as some of these places:

All,

I'm sure that all of us know at least someone in Louisiana if not New Orleans specifically and I am no different. I have been attempting to contact one of my customers there from the very beginning to offer assistance. I have home/work/cell phones for several folks there but outside of one time where I got one of the guy's voice mail message I have not been able to get other than a busy signal. Their web and email are out. Given they are 100 ft from I-10 it's unlikely they have anything besides a dark wet building at this time.

If anyone has any brilliant ideas of how to contact anyone in that area, please let me know privately. I'm coming up empty.

 - Larry
