Jim, I've got to go with Peter on this one, and actually advise against Birgitta's recommendations of using DATE() or CHAR(). While Birgitta's are obviously easier to understand the problem is that they require the SQL engine to perform the operation (either DATE or CHAR) on EVERY row and then evaluate the result to determine if it should select the row -- no index is going to help you here.
