All iSeries have at least 1 partition - before POWER5 the LPAR number was 0, it is now 1. In the old days it was often recommended that partition 0 should do nothing but manage other partitions, unless it were the only partition.

Multiple partition management is now handled by the HMC. If there is only one, you don't need the HMC - we are working that way.

We've had to give customers new license keys when moving to an i5, because of this very issue. It has been a little messy but manageable.

Maybe the common element is, "managed" partitions start numbering with 1, whether managed by a primary partition (pre-i5) or by HMC/FSP (i5 and forward).
