Lary,

Can I cram a 170 2291 full of 3004 (256M) DIMM's? I was told you could not
do more that 2x 3004, 2x 3002, 2x 3001 for a total of 832M. There are 8
slots and IF I can put in 8x 3004 I would have 2GB of Ram. Will it work? I
don't have the RAM to try and do not want to purchase if it will not work.
This could give me another year on these boxes.

The older generation of 170's, of which yours is one, will NOT support
the 256MB DIMMs. Yes I have tried this and while no damage was caused or
magic smoke lost, the system simply ignores those slots. You can cram
the thing full of 128MB DIMMs for a total of 1GB storage. While this is
above the posted 832MB max for the system it will work fine. You are
replacing the base 64MB with 256MB to get to the 1G size.
