Hi, I posted this message into the afp-l mailing list today and it is probably also appropriate for midrange-l as well. Best Regards, /Paul -----Original Message----- From: Paul Tykodi [mailto:ptykodi@xxxxxxxxx] Sent: Monday, April 11, 2005 12:45 AM To: afp-l@xxxxxxxxxx Subject: _[afp-l] Moving AFP Files From z Series to iSeries or iSeries to z Series Dear List, IBM announced in February 2005 that they were making a major investment in the i5-iSeries-AS/400 platform. It is called the IBM Charter for iSeries Innovation. It is a public announcement from IBM about a plan to expend significant resources on this particular server product to update its software toolset capabilities and to provide an incentive to application vendors to update or modernize existing iSeries software offerings. See the URL: http://www-1.ibm.com/press/PressServletForm.wss?MenuChoice=pressreleases&TemplateName=ShowPressReleaseTemplate&SelectString=t1.docunid=7541&TableName=DataheadApplicationClass&SESSIONKEY=any&WindowTitle=Press+Release&STATUS=publish IBM has begun receiving suggestions and requests for enhancements from customers and the ability to easily transfer AFP files from the Mainframe to an iSeries server or iSeries to the Mainframe, using TCP/IP protocols as opposed to SNA, has been voiced as an important requirement by some of the very large users of AFP. >From what I have learned over the past month, It seems quite possible that a project will be undertaken by the i5 OS development staff to improve the AFP file sending/receiving capabilities of the iSeries. Any such software development project would probably provide some form of command or script controlled method for automated management of transferring AFP files and resources. It is also conceivable that the information would be packaged in the classic ACIF format using variable data in a file and a package of external resources. For anyone who has ever been involved in the process of trying to move AFP files between these two host platforms, this new IBM initiative offers an opportunity to provide feedback to IBM with any suggestions or ideas you might have for improving the process. If you would like the contact details for the person at IBM to which ideas should be sent, please feel free to contact me off list at your convenience.
